Tasmanian Liberal MP Bridget Archer condemned moves to force unemployed people to apply for many more jobs each month in exchange for 'a very modest increase' in their dole payments.

A federal government backbencher has broken ranks to criticise changes to welfare rules, fearing they will impose a meaningless burden on people seeking work.

"I fail to see how encouraging job seekers to apply for jobs that they are in no way able to fill is helping anyone." Ms Archer said job seekers from her electorate had raised the issue of mandated appointments with job agencies, seeing them as"nothing more than a box-ticking exercise".Welfare advocates fear the government's JobSeeker 'dob-in' line will cause 'distrust and division'

Good on her

She's with the wrong party. The Liberals always make life for the disadvantaged a misery.

Not only is this cruel and ineffectual, it places a huge burden on business. For 1M jobseekers, that's 20 MILLION job applications per month for less than 200k jobs, just for these punitive mutual obligations. We have more than 1M on jobseeker, more coming from jobkeeper soon too

timwrig1 Thank goodness 😅 we have one still possessing humanity

The jobseeker rate is already below the poverty line! just raise it without adding more nonsensical conditions!

Stop importing people. Stop importing students. Give the Australian youth a chance in life. Their only prospects are to make coffee for the rich

I don't have to look for one job in 2 years because I have an exemption from looking for employment I'll never get due to homeschooling. Plus, the government won't allow me to be employed and if I could I would get an exemption on those grounds

At present Jobseekers are required to accept anything the Centrelink employment agency offers, so you get people who were earning over 100k p.a. now earning $26 an hour on a casual basis which doesn't help when you have permanent commitments such as rent or mortgage repayments.

Self interest. She is only worried about her own employment prospects after the next election. Bass is the most marginal LNP held electorate in the country.

SBS Modest? Insulting, offensive, inflammatory

Good for her. It's a waste of time for people who have to apply for jobs they won't get and a waste of time for business owners to have to sift through piles of applications from people who are unsuitable.
