Residents and workers in a Canberra suburb say they are worried for their health, homes and businesses after a fuel leak at a Caltex service station causes contamination of nearby soil and groundwater.

A fuel leak at a petrol station in Canberra's west has leached into surrounding soil and contaminated groundwater, leaving nearby homeowners and businesses worried their properties will have to be demolished. The ACT Environment Protection Authority says there is no health risk posed by the site

The Caltex service station in Kippax first discovered the leak in mid-February, at which point it decommissioned the tank. "The leak has migrated to the groundwater located approximately eight metres below ground surface and does not represent any immediate health risk," the letter from July said. The letter to nearby residents also said there had been extensive work done to pump out and recover the fuel from beneath the service station.

"We have now completed onsite investigations and are expanding works to include off-site areas surrounding the site," it said.

worried of homes and business...hmmm..that is an interesting addon to make to story spicy...am I missing something.

Why are there fears for the buildings?

Given risk communication is more important now than ever, might be worth rethinking the tone&focus of this headline. Unfortunately leaks from underground fuel tanks are quite common; fortunately there is also considerable local&intnl expertise in minimising/removing assoc. risks
