The father of an Australian 'hero' is now travelling to the US to join his grieving family after overcoming visa delays that caused him to fear he'd miss his son's funeral. 9News

"He was the one that fought off the intruders, he fought two of them away to protect his wife and kids and unfortunately he passed away doing it," Mr Estorffe told 9News outside his Queensland home.

Michael Estorffe fears he may not make it to the US in time for his son's funeral as his visa is delayed. Fort Bend Sheriff Troy Nehls said a team of 12 detectives is working around the clock to bring Mr Estorffe's killers to justice, with a reward of $36,000 on offer for any information that would assist.

He too praised the Australian dad, believed to have been unarmed, for paying the ultimate price to ensure his family's safety."What more honour can you bestow on an individual than that."Nothing was taken from the home, with Mr Nehls adding it seemed "unusual" to break in when people were likely inside.
