The government’s attempt to push through controversial voter ID laws before the next election now hangs on a handful of crossbenchers.
Labor and the Greens are strongly opposed to the laws, which Labor has described as “racist”. Indigenous academics and human rights groups have argued the proposed voter identification laws could stop many First Nations people from exercising their democratic right to vote. The government now needs the support of One Nation, which has announced a boycott on government bills unless the government moves to block states imposing vaccine mandates, to pass the bill. It would also need the support of either Jacqui Lambie or Centre Alliance’s Stirling Griff.
