But even Boehner, who once famously described the Freedom Caucus as “legislative terrorists”, might argue that the House of 2015 was relatively tame compared to the dysfunctional mess it is today. The void means there is currently no one who is third in the line of succession to the president. The absurdity began on October 4, when McCarthy was turfed using a new “motion to vacate” rule that he agreed to in January, in order to win the support of far-right Republicans to become Speaker.A few days after he was ousted, the party nominated Majority House leader Steve Scalise as McCarthy’s replacement, but he dropped out of the race after failing to get enough support for his bid to succeed in a full vote on the House floor.

Democrats didn’t like him because of his hardline views on abortion, his support of Trump’s attempt to subvert the 2020 election, and his known opposition to funding Ukraine in the war against Russia.Republican moderates wouldn’t support him for a variety of reasons: his tendency to block spending bills; his ongoing allegiance to Trump; a refusal to reward his allies - the so-called “Crazy 8 Led by Matt Gaetz” who ousted McCarthy in the first place.
