About 70 per cent of aged care residents suffer constipation. It can cause residents discomfort, pain, and start a downward spiral leading to delirium and death | juliepower

Happiness is a healthy bowel, some experts say. Yet new research shows 70 per cent of residents in aged care facilities suffer chronic constipation, making the condition more common than dementia, hypertension, arthritis and depression.

Helping a resident to go to the toilet and changing incontinence pads are among the most likely activities to The Bristol Stool Chart is used in hospitals and aged care facilities across the world to monitor and prevent constipation. His book advocates for greater openness about bowels. “Given the undeniably important role that opening our bowels plays in the broad sweep of human existence, it is truly mystifying that this pivotal bodily function enjoys such a diminutive place in our society.”

Toileting and monitoring bowel movements to prevent constipation was also “a massive job for aged care staff”.

juliepower Also it takes time for staff to attend to patients toileting, and remember there has been much talk about staff shortages. Sometimes it takes two staff to take someone to the toilet.

juliepower Unfortunatley a lot of them are on a constant drip-feed of opioids (side effect is constipation) for their arthritis pain - modern medicine has allowed people to live longer lives but has no cure for the arthritis which previous generations (who died younger) didn't get as badly.
