Maserati’s GranTurismo is back. Production of the venerable two-door, four-seat “grand tourer” wound up in 2019, after 13 years, and it has now been replaced by a car that some will struggle to differentiate from the last one.The GranTurismo Folgore lives up to its name : 0-100 km/h takes 2.7 seconds.
By placing batteries in front and behind the occupants, and along the central spine, he says Maserati has achieved a lower seating position and better handling. The argument for the latter is that a skateboard platform puts heavy batteries at the outer edges of the car, creating a bobbing raft effect. The Maserati approach keeps the weight closer to the roll centre.
Plug-in and go: the car foreshadows the inevitable move towards electrification for the luxury-sports category. The Folgore operates primarily as a rear-drive car, with the two uncoupled motors in the tail providing active torque vectoring, and recharging the battery while doing so. The system also activates torque vectoring by braking at the front to give a sharper turn-in than the petrol car can achieve, despite the Folgore carrying a weight penalty of 465kg.The handling is truly a marvel considering that extra heft.
