As the scramble for tickets to the Matildas' clash with England intensifies, one fan has shared a cautionary tale about the scam artists lying in wait on social media.

The fan told SkyNews.com.au he had been looking for tickets on Facebook, having first checked the official FIFA app to see there were none available, and found a group which purported to be made up of supporters exchanging tickets with each other.A fan desperate to secure tickets to the Matildas semi-final clash with England has offered a cautionary tale, as thousands of scammers look to exploit supporters clamoring to see the match.

The group featured posts supposedly from fans looking to sell tickets, with comments, likely from the same scammer making the posts, asking about price and asking to speak. It was then the scammer begun to work, first saying they could not send just one ticket and then faking a phone call to try and con the fan into believing their story.

Picture: Supplied In the run up to this year's World Cup, Group-IB research uncovered more then 16,000 scam domains, as well as dozens of fake social media accounts, advertisements and mobile apps targeting soccer fans.
