The final moments of the four victims are revealed for the first time at an inquiry investigating what went wrong in the fatal MRH-90 crash during a training exercise.

This is how five-year-old Noah calmly responded to his mother, when he first learned his father — a defence force helicopter pilot — was missing. She still presses the smart doorbell of the family's Sydney home, to see if daddy is on the other end to talk to her — like he used to be.But now, an inquiry is underway in a bid to help them, and three other families, learn how and why their loved ones died."He asks me if we know what happened to daddy yet," Caitland Lyon said.

Mrs Lyon agreed: " far less cruel than having us hoping and praying for a miracle that was actually impossible."This week was the first time Australians learned of the victims' last gut-wrenching final texts, words and hugs, as well as plans that were made but never eventuated – including engagements and starting a family. The last time Sarah Loft spoke with Corporal Alexander Naggs on the phone, she told him the feeling of missing him had really kicked in.

Ms Whyte had already been thinking it was strange her partner hadn't messaged her "goodnight" that evening. The entire fleet was grounded, but Captain Lyon feared not enough had been done to prevent another crash."That was a frustration that we both shared. You can identify the engine failure and then not do anything about it and you keep flying," Mrs Lyon said.

She said he told her the reason was "because D 20 had said she and her crew were too tired and it was unnecessary to fly". Mrs Lyon said despite receiving multiple assurances the names of those involved in the crash would be read out on the honour roll at the Anzac Day service at Holsworthy barracks, they were not.Lieutenant Maxwell Nugent's father, Daniel, was scathing of Queensland police and their handling of the investigation. He believes it happened because of too many unsuccessful password attempts – forever losing precious memories and photos.
