Fake vaccines, antivirals and purported cures for COVID-19 on dark web

Sales of purported and potentially dangerous "vaccines" for COVID-19, repurposed antiviral medications and personal protective gear are booming on dark web markets at exorbitant prices.

Professor Roderic Broadhurst, a professor of criminology, says his team identified many vendors selling purported vaccines on the dark web. The ANU found many COVID-related products including a respirator, according to a study to be released on Thursday by the Australian Institute of Criminology which commissioned the research.No vaccines or treatments have been approved for the virus, although more than 50 are being developed globally.

Another 33 per cent of sales were for antiviral and repurposed medicines. This included the antimalarial hydroxychloroquine that US President Donald Trump promoted as a cure despite evidence to the contrary. Sales of the antibiotic, azithromycin, which was touted as a treatment in combination with hydroxychloroquine, accounted for 11 per cent of unique listings.
