News Corp Business Columnist Terry McCrann says “it will be damaging” if the Morrison government can’t deliver a budget surplus in May.

The government has been retreating from previous predictions that it would deliver a budget surplus in May with Treasurer Josh Frydenberg revealing the financial impact of the coronavirus would be worse than the bushfires. He also argued no one could have predicted the virus would emerge when figures were being calculated last year, standing firm that no extreme fiscal measures would be taken.

“Nothing the government does could directly offset the coronavirus,” Mr McCrann told Sky News host Peta Credlin. He said the delivering of a budget surplus holds relative “symbolic” importance for the government but warned against “locking in serious big deficits” through drastic tax-cuts and enhanced spending. “I don’t see it as seriously damaging, either in political or in economic terms”.

Espionage activities are 'reaching a high point' in Australia | Sky News AustraliaExecutive Director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute Peter Jennings said the operation of foreign spies on Australian soil recently uncovered by ASIO indicates that our political independence” could be seriously compromised.\n\nOn Monday ASIO Director-General of Security Mike Burgess said a sleeper agent had been operating in Australia for years, gathering intelligence on dissidents before he was caught by the intelligence organisation and thrown out of the country.\n\n“What Mr Burgess did was lift the veil on a number of intelligence practices which will come as news to a lot of people in the broader community,” Mr Jennings told Sky News Host Chris Kenny. \n\n “These types of espionage activities have been happening in Australia for many years” but they are “reaching a high point at this moment,” he said. \n\nMr Jennings believes it to be “critically important” that Australians understand the significance of the threat that has been uncovered by ASIO and don’t think of it as “some type of James Bond fiction”.\n\nWhile the government has not publicly attributed the espionage operation to any particular nation, Mr Jennings said “China is the biggest strategic problem that we face at the moment”. \n But spy for what? Technology? Soil? Weather? Energy? Not sure what the spies look for. Why not turn the guy and have him feed back ambigious info implying other suspected spies had turned....then kick back & watch the show. No point outing him & deporting the guy. Hell just be replaced by another agent. It wouldnt be hard to make him afraid of going back to china.
