This weekend has been tinged with sadness for the F1 fraternity, following the sudden death of longtime race director Charlie Whiting. He had been involved in Formula One since 1977, playing a pivotal role as chief mechanic at Brabham when Nelson Piquet won both the 1981 and 1983 championships, before joining the FIA in 1988.
Whiting became the race director in 1997, and was very much at the centre of the F1 universe. It was Whiting who started each race, and decided if and when to deploy the safety car. Drivers would often be heard on their radio during races imploring their team to “tell Charlie” if they felt something had happened that required intervention from the FIA.
Each car will carry a tribute to Whiting during this afternoon's race, in most cases just a simple "Thanks Charlie" message to the man loved by everybody in the sport.
