is not a household name in Australia, but the American-owned institution has been quietly growing at a speed that rocket scientists might find difficult to explain. From an inaugural intake of just 146 students in 2013 to 21,500 last year, the multi-campus, multi-branded institution has grown 150-fold in just nine years.
“We have always worked with the smartest people, not trying to do everything ourselves and ensuring that our students get value for money. That is the difference.”Torrens has 14 campuses across the country and is best known for some of the high-profile colleges under its umbrella. These include Billy Blue College of Design, Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School and Chifley Business School. It also has acquired Think Education and the New Zealand-based Media Design School.
A commerce degree at Torrens costs a local student $52,560, compared to $43,500 at a public university., well before she welcomed former US president Bill Clinton to the Adelaide Festival Centre in 2014 to officially open the university. As honorary chancellor of its then owner Laureate International Universities, which is listed on the NASDAQ, Mr Clinton charmed the full stadium with anecdotes and even foretold of a Russian war against Ukraine.
Robert Silberman, executive chairman of Strategic Education, was in Australia for the EY announcement.
