A call to ban no-ground evictions in Western Australia has failed to pass through parliament, making the state and the Northern Territory the only jurisdictions in Australia where landlords can evict tenants without a good reason.

Parliament in one state has failed to ban no-ground evictions , making it one of only two jurisdictions in Australia that allows the practice to take place.

Boxing champion Troy Humberston was evicted from his home for no reason, then found himself in a situation where his landlord was demanding he perform “favours” to stay at the property. Mr Humberston said there was no recourse for landlords in WA and that young men and women were being forced to perform sexual acts to avoid being on the streets.Mining and Pastoral Region MLC Wilson Tucker attended the rally after being evicted for no grounds and found himself competing with thousands of people for a handful of properties that were available to rent.

“Once again this government has its head in the sand and hasn’t listened to the evidence and has disappointingly sided with property developers and the real estate industry ignoring the renters.”
