At least 55 people have been killed after a fuel tanker exploded in Niger's capital, Niamey. The tank overturned and burst into flames near the international airport as crowds tried to collect spilled fuel.

The blast left another 36 people injured, while damaging nearby cars and homes. The country's president has called the explosion a 'national tragedy' after visiting a hospital where dozens of the wounded were taken. Authorities warn the death toll will rise, as many casualties remain critical in hospital.
