EXPLAINER: Sky News Political Editor David Speers says the ‘soul searching’ within the Nationals is underway after the party suffered a significant swing against it in Saturday’s NSW election. While the NSW Coalition secured majority government, the National Party lost two ‘heartland’ seats to the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party.

In response to the election result, former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce says Nationals 'must not sit quietly' in the lead up to the federal election and the party must 'clearly announce' its own policies. Former Liberal NSW Premier Nick Greiner told Mr Speers that the ‘revolt in the regions’ is not just a NSW phenomenon and that conservative parties need to ‘work hard’ to win these voters back.
