The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted a monsoon could return over the weekend in the north of Queensland and Northern Territory.

Residents are being warned about potential flash flooding and exercise caution around creeks, rivers and coastal areas.

Severe storms have already hit the area, dumping more than 63 millimetres of rain in Cairns and 71 millimetres in Townsville.
