Consumer Affairs Victoria barrister Elle Nikou Madalin spent more than two hours quizzing Gibson about her income, debts and spending habits, including the price tag of the clothes she was wearing to court.
However Ms Nikou Madalin said Gibson’s bank statements revealed many purchases using Afterpay, a buy-now-pay-later service popular with online shoppers. Gibson also said that Mr Rothwell paid for a trip she took with her son earlier this year to East Africa, which cost $5000. He gave her $2000 in cash to pay for the accommodation, she said.
She was unable to say how much she spent on food, recreation or any other holidays since 2015. She said she was not currently seeing a psychologist, but was visiting a chiropractor two to three times a month. "[The documents] reveal a great many transactions overwhelmingly in the nature of discretionary spending,” Ms Nikou Madalin told the court.
