Investigations are underway to identify the new wreckage, which includes a large piece of fuselage and a propeller.

The search for a missing WWII aircraft has led to the recovery of wreckage suspected to be from another Australian bomber.

Now a spokesman has confirmed that Dr Forrest's expedition to the waters around New Britain in Papua New Guinea earlier this year also led to the recovery of wreckage suspected to be from another Australian bomber. The spokesperson said investigations were underway to identify the new wreckage, which includes a large piece of fuselage and a propeller.

No remains of the other two crew members — Flight Sergeant Albert Beckett, 22, from Launceston and Flight Sergeant Gordon Lewis Hamilton, 26, from Brisbane — were recovered. The identification of the remains has brought some closure to relatives of the missing men, with the children of Warrant Officer Grigg writing to Dr Forrest to say: "It meant the world to us to know our father's last resting place".

"If we win this war, then my little sacrifice will be nought with the thousands of others, and it will have been worthwhile for the youngster's sake and this lovely country of ours,'' Warrant Officer Grigg wrote. After he had been missing for a year, she wrote to the secretary asking what she should do with the uniforms he left behind.

"I wish to advise that I have received your letter in which the death of my husband Warrant Officer Russell Henry Grigg has now been presumed."The Grigg's have speculated that their father may have known Dr Forrest's missing uncle.
