A senior government source has told Sky News rising unemployment in WA and an uptick of COVID-19 cases in NZ demonstrates the much praised elimination strategy does not work. Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell said the federal government has chosen to adopt a suppression strategy to combat COVID-19, which is aimed at flattening the curve to keep the number of infected within the capacity of the health care system.
He said the nation’s jobless rate remained steady, states that have enacted a hard borders to ward off new cases of COVID-19 have recorded a rise in its unemployment rate. “Two of the three jurisdictions that have shut their borders, the NT and Queensland, have risen in terms of their unemployment rate by 1.1 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively," Mr Clennell said.
