Queensland Liberal Senator Amanda Stoker says the effect of the coronavirus on the Australian economy “depends on how quickly it can be contained and how big the problem becomes”. There are fears the coronavirus could cost the tourism industry $1 billion a month in lost revenue. The education and seafood industries have also struggled due to a heavy reliance on Chinese business.

While Prime Minister Scott Morrison acknowledged “there will be an economic hit because of the coronavirus” but encouraged Australians to remain positive because “there will also be a recovery”. "We don’t know how big or how small this coronvavirus outbreak is going to be," Ms Stoker told Sky News host Chris Kenny. "And that’s why we’ve taken every step we possibly can to contain it".
