Fire has been part of the northern Australian landscape for millennia but concern is growing that modern fire management techniques are doing irreparable damage.

"The traditional owners, before colonisation, were themselves walking through the landscape constantly burning to maintain vegetation or make it easier to get through or for hunting purposes," he said.

These projects, located remotely, aim to reduce the emissions that occur from severe fires that burn later in the year. When passengers book a Qantas flight there is the option to "tick the box" and pay to offset the carbon produced by flying. These projects report to the Clean Energy Regulator on emissions calculated using satellite-derived fire-scar mapping and by comparing emissions released from burning in that year to the 10-year average baseline emissions for that project area.Kristina Koenig is the program manager for Kimberley Land Council's carbon program, which assists traditional owners in the region with registering and operating their carbon projects.

She said she couldn't comment specifically on how much income burning generated for ranger groups, but she said the money was used mainly to fund fire operations year to year and employ rangers on country. "And trade that by saying, 'If we burn it now we're going to produce less carbon in a wild burn in a few months' time'.Fires lit at the end of the wet season burn smaller areas than fires ignited at the end of the dry season.

“pastoralists and Indigenous groups can get paid for carbon credits by airlines and oil and gas companies to burn the bush early in the season” dirty money involved - I get the logic, but I dare say there is a conflict of interest.

Star under fire over ‘Asian’ tweetMegan Rapinoe is the face of US Soccer and a new face of Victoria’s Secret but on Thursday night she found herself in a bit of hot water after an old tweet of hers was dug up. Well maybe the person did? Looks are looks. Are these whingers who are complaining about this actually saying it is bad to look Asian? Now that would be offensive. By us demanding that everyone have been perfect throughout their whole life (and with social media it is too easy to track) are we ignoring the role that learning from mistakes and personal growth have in society.
