Essendon tall forward Sam Weideman will challenge the three-match ban handed down to him the VFL, after bumping Carlton young gun Harry Lemmey in the head.Lemmey left the field after the bump and was not concussed.
Weideman had the option of accepting a two-week ban with an early guilty plea, but has instead decided to appeal in hope of having his sentence revoked.With the Bombers not playing this week due to their mid-season bye, his appeal won’t be heard until next week. The 26-year-old hasn’t appeared in the Bombers’ senior side since Round 24 last year – a game where he kicked two goals.
Fellow club key forwards Peter Wright and Harrison Jones have previously been suspended in the AFL side this season. Weideman played at Melbourne for seven seasons before being traded to Essendon for pick 37 at the end of the 2022 season, with some late draft picks also going the way of the Bombers.Lemmey, who was on the receiving end of the key forward’s bump, is yet to debut for the Blues in his second year at the club, and is contracted until the end of 2025.
