Ben Stokes has observed Steve Smith at close quarters, both as a teammate and opponent. He's not normal.

The England superstar offered the fitting description of Smith and his batting on the podcast of IPL team Rajasthan Royals, where both men play.

Smith has perhaps the most egocentric batting style in world cricket, full of unusual tics and a pre-delivery routine that involves touching every piece of his protective equipment. He is also well known for his exaggerated leaves and for shadow batting in his hotel room at all hours. "He's still strange to play against and he's still strange to play with, and the best thing about it is that he admits it. He knows it," Stokes said."Even though I've played against him and he plays for Australia … you've just got to hold your hands up sometimes to people like that and go, 'Yeah, you are on a different level when it comes to batting'.

"I could never be like that. Personally, I could not think about cricket in the way he does when it comes to batting. He's on all the time. That's why he averages 60."Smith boasts a historic Test average of 62.84, against just 36.54 for Stokes. Yet the pair share an ability to produce special innings, which each did during last year's Ashes.
