Skill shortages are a big national challenge and few are as critical as the shortage of engineers.

The $22 billion in major infrastructure projects so far outlined in the federal budget will struggle to start, never mind finish on time and on budget, as an critical shortage of engineers threatens to cripple economic expansion,Rapid turnover and poaching of engineers to other sectors have combined with two years of zero skilled migration and falling international student enrolments to put the future engineering workforce in need of an urgent transfusion.

A meeting of 60 industry and academic representatives in December concluded that a new approach to engineering education was urgently needed, Group of Eight chief executive Vicki Thomson said. The solution must focus on increasing enrolments of domestic students in engineering courses, the report says.

Nicola Grayson, chief executive of Consult Australia, said reliance on skilled migration programs was risky and there were important reasons why Australia should develop its domestic engineering workforce.

Ukraine's 'safe city' Lviv becomes a new target for Russian forcesRussian missiles hit an oil depot and a defence facility in residential parts of the western city, causing injuries and considerable damage to infrastructure, and leaving residents reeling. It was simply never about protecting ethnic Russians in the east. It was always about the immoral destruction of a culture & heritage. UkraineWar 🙏🙏🙏 The whole 'city' is not the target, though The Age wants you to think that. It's even in the story: 'Russian missiles have hit an oil depot and a defence facility in residential parts of the city.' It is all part of cutting supply lines and neutralizing military infrastructure.
