Australians have been watching in horror after a ship veered into a pier of the Francis Scott Bridge in Baltimore, causing its collapse with at least six people missing. On Sunrise on Wednesday, engineering expert Tim Wilkinson reassured Australians a similar event was unlikely in our own country.
Engineering expert reveals why Francis Scott Bridge disaster in Baltimore is unlikely in Australia Australia famously experienced a similar incident in 1975 when the bulk carrier Lake Illawarra hit a pylon of the Tasman Bridge in Hobart, causing it to collapse. Wilkinson said Australian engineers learned a lot from that incident and it was now less likely that a ship would veer off course and hit a pylon.
