The increases by the country’s third-biggest energy retailer came as one AGL customer was slugged with an 83 per cent tariff increase for electricity.

Around 5 million households are facing higher electricity and gas bills after EnergyAustralia joined major retailers pushing through significant increases in tariffs starting July 1, many of which will not qualify for the $3 billion in federal and state relief. The big increases in the regulated energy tariffs have been well-flagged, but the size of the jump in some extreme cases has left customers stunned.

One AGL customer in outer Sydney was reeling on Friday after being notified of an 83 per cent hike in their general usage tariff for electricity. The customer’s daily supply charge will jump about 30 per cent., pointing to AGL’s upgrade in its earnings guidance for this financial year and next, issued Friday.

Prices on the wholesale market have since fallen back significantly, pointing to the potential for a turnaround in household tariffs in 2024-25.
