The imminent decision around when to close Australia’s biggest coal-fired power station is a watershed moment between an ideological approach to climate change and the laws of physics.

To cut to the chase, Eraring power station, the biggest machine in the country, cannot close next year without causing serious power shortages and technical challenges in NSW. It’s not a

Last year a group of anonymous eco-philanthropists funded a report boldly and unequivocally claiming Eraring could close. The analysis contained no evidence to support this claim, nor did it even discuss the critical technical issues which frame every step from here. Investment in both solutions aren’t ready. The delays in replacing Eraring’s 2.8GW of capacity are well documented: renewable supply chain constraints, transmission and planning delays.

This includes installing up to 21 giant flywheels across NSW over the next decade to replicate the physical properties of massive coal turbines. The process of closing NSW’s remaining coal generators is an order of magnitude more complex than what has been done in Big Renewables South Australia. The SA grid is much smaller, and coal was a marginal rather than central player. The smaller grid has subsequently relied heavily on its interstate transmission connections and remaining fleet of big, heavy gas turbines.
