OPINION: China’s omnipresence in renewable industries was lurking in the background on day one of the global energy forum in Sydney organised by the Australian government.

It is strange indeed that a gathering in Sydney of 170 business and government leaders from 26 countries to discussThis glaring omission could have been a function of the Chinese not accepting the invitations sent by the former Coalition government, which wanted the forum to be the Indo-Pacific version of a Davos-style energy conference.

Albanese said: “It is essential that the unprecedented levels of investment in clean energy technologies required over the coming decades unlocks more diverse and secure supply chains than we have today. According to the IEEJ, China processes 90 per cent of rare earth elements, about 65 per cent of cobalt, 60 per cent of lithium, 40 per cent of copper and 35 per cent of nickel.

Terazawa said this not only put Japanese industry in a very difficult situation, it provided a reminder to the country that the automobile industry was hostage to Chinese actions. The forum was an opportunity for Australia and the US to send a signal to China that securing clean energy supply chains are integral to the relationship between the countries.

Bowen told the forum during his speech that Green was a “national treasure”. He is widely regarded as the father of the rooftop solar revolution.
