The federal government is taking on the gas industry as it finalises plan to cap prices for domestic commercial and industrial customers at between $11 and $13 per gigajoule and corral the states into similar price caps for coal.

Labor risks picking a fight with the gas industry with a plan to cap prices at between $11 and $13 a gigajoule for commercial and industrial customers in a move that could threaten additional supply and open up a battle between Queensland and southern states.

The federal government is finalising plans for price gaps on gas following a vociferous campaign by small businesses struggling with soaring prices and claims by Australian manufacturers they cannot survive unless the government acts. The federal government can impose price controls or other restrictions affecting the gas industry but it has to rely on the states to take action to curb coal prices.

Brickworks managing director Lindsay Partridge said the deal reflected the commercial realities of tightening gas supply in Australia and that its long term was an important factor in helping to ward off a shrinking manufacturing sector.“It’s at a price that we’re comfortable with, and they’re comfortable with, and that we can recover in the market,” Partridge said on Tuesday.

“The issue with the gas companies, if I may say, has been that they’ll propose nothing and oppose everything.” “We will just pull our gas offers from the market and say see you in 12 months and good luck,” said one producer.to help cool the inflationary impact of energy prices, Ms Palaszczuk challenged Victoria and NSW to lift their game by opening new sources.
