A major Australian energy company has floated the prospect of building an offshore wind farm that could completely power one Victoria's biggest power users.
The mooted wind farm, known as the Spinifex Offshore Wind Farm, comes days after the federal government introduced a framework to regulate the offshore renewable energy projects last week., which received funding from the state government.The idea of constructing the offshore wind farm was released by Alinta Energy in an attempt to be as transparent as possible, according to the company.
"The great thing about this proposal is that we can connect to the grid via the smelter and won’t need to build new powerlines on private land," Mr Lynch said."The area we’re investigating is around 500 square kilometres and about 10 kilometres from the shoreline," he said.Alinta Energy said the timeline between now and reaching construction was between five and 10 years.
Well one good thing, building offshore will help not to destroy natural landscapes/beautiful rural countryside with steel & carbon fibre monstrosities. In time I suppose they will just let the rust buckets and oil fall into the sea and pollute the ocean.

Totally makes sense. The wind always blows stronger offshore because it uses water to gain energy. 5 yrs to build? If your going to do it do it now.
