The Alcoa Aluminium Smelter in Portland is one of the Victoria's biggest electricity users. One of the companies that supplies its power wants to turn it green.

A major Australian energy company has floated the prospect of building an offshore wind farm that could completely power one Victoria's biggest power users.

The mooted wind farm, known as the Spinifex Offshore Wind Farm, comes days after the federal government introduced a framework to regulate the offshore renewable energy projects last week., which received funding from the state government. The idea of constructing the offshore wind farm was released by Alinta Energy in an attempt to be as transparent as possible, according to the company.

"The great thing about this proposal is that we can connect to the grid via the smelter and won’t need to build new powerlines on private land," Mr Lynch said."The area we’re investigating is around 500 square kilometres and about 10 kilometres from the shoreline," he said.Alinta Energy said the timeline between now and reaching construction was between five and 10 years.

Well one good thing, building offshore will help not to destroy natural landscapes/beautiful rural countryside with steel & carbon fibre monstrosities. In time I suppose they will just let the rust buckets and oil fall into the sea and pollute the ocean.

until the wind drops....

Totally makes sense. The wind always blows stronger offshore because it uses water to gain energy. 5 yrs to build? If your going to do it do it now.

We need a change of government so that we can move into the 21st century.

Labor rules out boosting 2030 climate target if electedLabor’s climate change and energy spokesperson Chris Bowen has rejected claims from Prime Minister Scott Morrison its 2030 emissions target amounts to an “opening bid” in negotiations with the Greens: I would be OK with that. Rejecting the science. Well, they’re looking after their donors, instead of representing the people. Disappointing. One wonders what the fuss is from the Libs and supporters when it comes to the possibility that negotiations with other parties by Labor might be needed to secure govt after all they have been in a minority situation propped up by an at times radical National party for decades.
