A police officer has survived being stabbed multiple times in the head in Sydney’s CBD. The male constable was stabbed “in the back of the head a number of times” allegedly by a man with the 30cm kitchen knife near Hyde Park on Elizabeth St on Sunday afternoon, Superintendent Martin Fileman said. He had been on traffic duties with another constable when they were approached by the 33-year-old man. The man allegedly stabbed the officer before running through the park, according to Fileman.
The officer was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital. The alleged stabber was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for assessment. The man is known to police but does not have a history of mental illness or serious criminal conduct. There is no ongoing threat to the public, police said. The emergency response to the incident has forced the closure of Park St between Pitt St and Elizabeth St. Southbound lanes of Castlereagh St at Market St are also closed.
