One of Auckland’s most exclusive private schools is copping criticism for a ban on the hijab, which it says violates the school dress code.

News of the prohibition on the headscarf at Diocesan School for Girls comes less than a week after 50 Muslims were killed in two Christchurch mosques,The ban may also be in contravention of the Human Rights Act and the New Zealand Bill of Rights.that teachers at the school were yesterday told the Islamic dress was a breach of the school rules.

“No wearing of jewellery or nail polish, skirt length, a requirement to tie back long hair and wear the school blazer outside school grounds, shoe styles and so on,” her statement said.quoted an unnamed male teacher at the school who said the announcement was made after “concerns were raised by a colleague” about some of the school’s Muslim students not being able to wear the hijab.

“She said ‘and of course, you’ve all signed onto this. I want you to support this position, not oppose it,” the teacher at the a private Anglican school told“There was just silence . I got the feeling that people were shocked this was a thing.” A National Scarf Day, encouraging women to wear headscarves in support of Muslim women, has also been proposed.

It's an Anglican school. I don't see an issue

Mother Mary wore a hijab so what’s the problem folks

I also worked overseas for 10 years, 3 years in a Muslim country. I follow the dress code of where I worked. I expect all people should do the same when joining a school, job, new country. Show some respect for the people who are helping you.

You go to a school, police, or any organization you need to follow their dress code. We've had various minorities with different dress codes enter our countries for years, and they all follow our dress code. Why are Muslims more special than other religious and ethnic minorities?

The correct approach by the school

Great news, there better people than the PM

Of course this story comes out of the woodwork now when all emotions are exacerbated. My question is do Muslim schools have restrictions- most definitely yes.

and so they should ban it,, has no place in the western world

Why should some students not have to adhere to the uniform policy ?

When a woman visit an Islamic country she is obliged to cover her head, therefore when she comes to a happy country we shoul oblige her to wear a bikini. Who wants to live in an occidental country should adopt occidental dress code.

If my daughter went to Muslim school Im pretty sure she would be forced to wear a hijab

If you dont like it go to another school....

Good. Hijab even with Muslims is only optional. Go to a Muslim school instead. brisbanetimes

Rules are rules ..go elsewhere . I like the rule as well as the no piercings and uniform required.

Stop telling people they have to accept Islam... or its customs...do you think we would have any rights in an Islamic country? Hell no! If a school doesn’t want a hijab worn then respect their right to choose. Stop bending the rules for one faith whilst every other has to comply.

Good one ☝️

This elite school should B PM...not that ridiculous chick who sported a hijab 🧕...something a male would not do! The school has more sense than the heaps of dhimmis we R seeing all over NZ & Oz! ROP Islam Jihad

Did the student go to school for the interview or what not wearing the hijab? If not you are violating the school rule. There’s no but. End of discussion. A word of advice. You don’t have to force your view in every single same thing you know!

Well if it's a private school they're entitled to have their own rules. Don't like it then go to a public school.

That is a very brave school in this PC crazy world. 👏👏

When we visit certain countries we must follow their rules as a condition of entry ( like a must wearing head cover for women and no alcohol ) what makes you right ? Is it just one sided thing ? You can dicted rules and we can’t do in countries soil mentioned ?

- still using the terrorists name and now digging for a negative story about muslims. Aside from all the mafs stories you are just a bit tacky. unfollow

Maintain the ban, rules are rules, what’s next the key to the city,we have had a tragedy occur,we have caught the culprit,we must learn from lt and move on.

Don't like the rule? Choose another school simple

A good ban

Don’t ban it, and soon they’ll make sure all you Western princesses wear it 😒

Diversity in action. Great. Get over it News

Same sort of school that made me wear a hat when I did not want to.

It’s started.

The veiling of young girls, especially prepubescent girls should never be normalised. Religion is no excuse.

There isn’t a reason to ban it. The teachers can still see the faces of their students. A hijab isn’t going to affect the students learning. So what’s the issue?

I mean if it violates the code it violates the code. If you don't like that get in the school board and change it.

There’s a lot of hijab love these days.

Cant wait to see the bleeding heart liberals eat themselves alive over this....and just wait till they start objecting to the teaching of LGBTQ in schools...fools

Rules are rules regardless whether your Islamic or any other religion

They’re absolutely right to do so. It’s a symbol of the religious oppression of women.

Their school their rules. Like any other dress code rule. Here’s a newsflash. Not all Muslim women/girls wear hijabs either.

And now we’re off to the races. Even mentioning Islam now will be a flogging offence. You know..... like they do in Indonesia every Friday.
