An award-winning journalist returns to Bourke with his storytelling skills to help local youth capture the stories of their elders.

"When I first left Bourke I was 17, and I got so homesick that I was coming back and forth," he said."But there were people there that understood and who encouraged me, and I had people who came up to me and offered me opportunities. Now based in France, Clarke has returned to Bourke to work on a project that he hopes will inspire the next generation of the town's youth.

The Spirit Project is closely aligned with a documentary film being made about the unsung heroes of Bourke's recent past — the Aboriginal community leaders who led the push for better education, health and human rights. It gives school students an insight into interview and research techniques to encourage them to develop the stories of their elders and to share them.
