A 77-year-old Adelaide grandmother with a broken hip has been forced to wait almost three hours for an ambulance. 7NEWS

James, an elderly cancer patient, was pruning the trees at her home with her daughter when she lost her footing and fell on the footpath at 4.40pm.Her daughter Naomi called triple zero immediately, and rushed to stop the bleeding, but as the sun began to set, all she could do was try her best to keep her mother warm.

The callout was initially considered a priority three by SA Ambulance staff, who in such cases aim to respond within 30 minutes, but was later upgraded by authorities to a priority two. “As much as we wanted to get her up and put her in the car and take her, I’m glad we didn’t, because that fracture could’ve got a lot worse.A neighbour who was helping at the scene told 7NEWS: “We obviously stopped the bleeding, but we couldn’t move her because she was in a lot of pain.”“It genuinely breaks my heart, but it also, I think, vindicates the fact that we are doing the right thing by putting a lot more investment in our health system,” SA Premier Peter Malinauskas said.
