is a beguiling novel based on lurid true crime from Japan. Known as the Konkatsu Killer, Kanae Kijima was convicted of poisoning her male lovers. Here Kijima becomes Kajimana, and our protagonist Rika Machida is a female journalist busting a gut to get ahead in a male-dominated media landscape. Kajimana’s case attracts the misogyny of the press and she refuses to talk to them after a raft of fat-shaming coverage. Hungry for an exclusive interview, Rika connects with Kajimana over fatal recipes.

Seven years later in Washington, Foley’s mother Diane Foley, a deeply religious woman, sat opposite the man who confessed to the conspiracy to kill her son. Irish novelist Colum McCann, with Foley, recreates her story, and that two-day encounter, their dialogue unfolding like a surreal game of chess.
