According to GeoScience Australia the earthquake started offshore about 1.30pm between Port Hedland and Broome and registered as a magnitude 6.6 event.
"The Meckering earthquake 50 years ago was a magnitude six, so the earthquake that occurred this afternoon is significantly larger than the last one. I think there's been one or two in recorded history that are larger than the earthquake that occurred today in WA, but not that many.The 1968 Meckering earthquake registered a 6.5 magnitude, and over 60 homes were damaged by the shock, with the the railway line twisting and water pipes bursting as a result.
