Sheridan spoke to Sky News Australia’s Peta Credlin on Wednesday night, following reports that the Albanese government was happy to allow tech companies like Facebook to censor content about the Voice during the referendum campaign.
According to Sheridan, this interference in a crucial public debate has the whiff of Cuban or North Korean politics, where citizens are not allowed to know things. “It is profoundly undemocratic that a couple of tech company executives decide what Australians are allowed to hear in a debate,” Sheridan said.
Facebook’s censorship decisions led conservative think tank the Institute of Public Affairs to request that regulations in the Broadcasting Services Act, which ensure political parties have “reasonable opportunities” to broadcast election material, be extended to cover technology and social media companies.
