NSW is 100 drought affected, but rain this week could provide some relief.

Supplied: NSW DPI"In the last 12 months the rainfall we've seen has largely been ineffective," season conditions coordinator Scott Wallace said.

"Winter crops were well down and the lack of rain means the summer crop outlook is also looking poor." Given the CDI also looks at soil moisture, pasture growth and crop growth, a pretty grim picture has been painted. Some growers are punting on rain falling later this week and have begun dry seeding crops, but Jordan Notara from the BOM said the rain will be"hit and miss" with showers and storms on the north coast initially, before the rain reaches inland.

Thunderstorms are predicted to also bring strong winds and dust storms, which could be a bitter pill for farmers desperate for rain if all their hopes turn to dust. The three-month rainfall totals predicted for between February and April have a 75 per cent chance of occurring.

Calmer conditions across NSW provide fireground reprieveCalming conditions will give NSW firefighters the opportunity to slow and control more than 50 uncontrolled fires as South Coast towns welcome back tourists. Is it really only 3000 firefighters for NSW on any given day? Is the issue of volunteering to do with unionism? I have surmised that country firefighters decided long ago that they would rather not be paid than join a union. Am I right? Dangerous work. Hangers everywhere and it takes time to clear trees. Good luck fellas.
