Just before 2:00pm, forest management firefighter Mat Kavanagh was returning to the town of Alexandra after he and a colleague had spent the morning attending camping sites to ensure fires were extinguished. During a plea hearing today, the County Court heard of the funny, passionate, loving and loyal man Mr Kavanagh was to his wife, two children, extended family and friends.

Mr Selby's experience in those same bushfires was such that he was diagnosed with PTSD after losing loved ones.
