Driver who killed firefighter during summer crisis hears family's pain in court

They were two men with much in common — both affected by loss in the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009, and both young fathers.Novak Selby, 47, has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Mat Kavanagh in JanuaryMr Selby at first acted in self-interest, the court heard, but then felt a "true and proper remorse"

Just before 2:00pm, forest management firefighter Mat Kavanagh was returning to the town of Alexandra after he and a colleague had spent the morning attending camping sites to ensure fires were extinguished. During a plea hearing today, the County Court heard of the funny, passionate, loving and loyal man Mr Kavanagh was to his wife, two children, extended family and friends.

Mr Selby's experience in those same bushfires was such that he was diagnosed with PTSD after losing loved ones.
