Dreaming of Oz: the holiday havens our foreign correspondents miss the most | GoodWeekendMag

“Brisbane has always had far more to it than meets the eye, which I’m glad to see even the organisers of the Olympics have now realised.”My first memories of Brisbane are of my family travelling there from Gympie, where I grew up, to see my grandparents. It was only a two-hour trip down the Bruce Highway but for three kids, crammed into the back of a station wagon, it was as if we were coming from Cairns.

His car needed two pumps of the clutch to change gears, but I adored it, with its quarter glasses and vinyl upholstery. Years on, when I was working in Brisbane for a couple of years after uni, he let me borrow it to impress a girl. She said it smelt like chips and farts, but liked it enough to go out with me again.

In my previous life as a cricket reporter, my parents would drive down from Gympie to see me when I was in town for a Test match, and we’d meet for tea, as they call dinner up their way, at the Himalayan Cafe or the Norman Hotel or at a Thai restaurant in the suburbs; the laminate on the menus would be peeling, but the green curry was faultless.

As for the city itself, I’ve tended to stay around West End or Woolloongabba in recent times, not just because of their proximity to the cricket ground but because, in my northside-focused youth and in the inner-west bias of uni days, I’d never really given south of the river the attention I should have. It’s something that might be said about Brisbane in general.

Once we’d have been embarrassed by such a display of beach paraphernalia. My partner and I grappled with our own contribution to the visual pollution of an otherwise spotless shoreline. But in the end we succumbed, our new middle-aged, sun-safe aesthetic beckoning. What good was the beach if we could not sit and enjoy it for more than a little sunburn? And so it was, in this nugget of southern NSW, that we found our final form as beach bogarts.

I’ve craved the wide open spaces and smell of salty air mixing with eucalyptus trees as you head towards this strip of coast.
