Cancel culture is a meaningless, slippery term that means whatever people want it to mean; just so long as their points of view are immune from question. | OPINION DrSeuss cancelculture

So, contrary to what some commentators have suggested, nobody is banning children’s books. But that hasn’t stopped a predictable response from some quarters that this is the latest example of a censorious “Cancel culture is the latest insult thrown about from people, almost always political and social conservatives, who brought you “woke” and “political correctness gone mad”.

It’s pretty rich, though, that cancel culture has become the favourite pejorative term of conservatives because historically it has been their traditional attitudes to issues like race, gender, divorce and families that has driven real cases of cancelation. Just ask women who were not able to vote, be educated, get a safe abortion or work after marriage. Or members of the gay community whose love lives were subject to the criminal law.

Only last month, the Morrison government cancelled one of the great institutions of modern Australia – the . The Law Council of Australia condemned the move saying it will be devastating for children, families and survivors of family violence.

The same way people use the word 'phobia' these days?

What happened last time books were banned? Anyone History is there for us all to learn from, not ignore

All sooks

Cancel culture is an example of language’s delightful ability to respond quickly to new phenomena, whether social (as here) or technological.

Ahhh an opinion piece, the one thing opinion's have in common with assholes is that everybody has one

History is repeating itself with the censorship of literature happening again. 1933 changed nothing. Censorship is wrong regardless the reasons behind it you are destroying history because if your personal opinions.

What rubbish! Everyone knows what it means.

No it literally means a small group of noisy woke idiots amplify their unrepresentative views via social media and force their intolerant narrow minded joyless views onto everyone else via the fear of being cancelled.

Lets have free speech then. Oh, ok, thought not.

I'll bet this dog gets cancelled

I was hoping to find some insightful analysis re cancel culture, instead, half way through, I realized the author was not interested in that. The article is just his convenient vehicle to attack what he sees as 'political and social conservatives'. Don't waste your time on this.

Factually correct though!

'A mature society?' ... a mature society is one that gets over its immature pre occupation with its genitals .. we have a long long way to go and getting rid of Seuss wont fix that ..

How many of these people were Dr Seuss fans two days ago? Seuss is shabby after the age of 6 yo. Just like Rudyard Kipling isn’t taught in schools either, nice poems- but racist as f-these celebrants will run out of room on their mantle elevating all these prophets of yore

Nobody is cancelling Dr Seuss (books). It’s a gesture to acknowledge that certain parts of certain books are racially insensitive, stereotyping some ethnicities. Every time I saw/read this part it made me cringe.

And if we continue to let minority get there way they just keep going.. only takes one corporate to tell these snowflake minority to F off & the others follow, but there scared about bad publicity & do token gestures to look Good..

Difficult to debate a lawyer, but I would think that there is a general consensus on the common usage of “cancel culture”. Like any terminology, people will misuse & abuse it for their own prejudices, but the term certainly has valid usage, & it does describe a real phenomenon.
