Dozens of festivalgoers ingested potentially fatal levels of MDMA, inquest told | gmitch_news

More than two dozen people who became "seriously unwell" at NSW music festivals in 2018 and 2019 were found to have MDMA in their system at such a high level it was consistent with a coma or death, an inquest has been told.

She said the recent deaths are "an unexpectedly marked increase within a short period", and the reasons behind such an increase are "complex" including the dose of MDMA consumed and environmental factors such as temperature. In a statement tendered to the inquest, Dr Chant said after the deaths of Ms Nguyen and Mr Pham in September 2018, the NSW Ministry of Health ordered extended toxicology testing for those who became ill after attending a festival.

"It's really important to know there's no one silver bullet here and we need to progressively strengthen our harm reduction," Dr Chant said. He said ACT Policing does not use drug dogs at music festivals, either inside or outside the event, because they have seen negative outcomes in some instances.
