The former newsreader wins the seat of Rosevears for the Liberal Party in a tight race with Launceston City councillor and former mayor Janie Finlay.

Former newsreader Jo Palmer has been elected to Tasmania's Legislative Council following a tight race with Launceston City councillor and former mayor Janie Finlay.

Ms Palmer, who contested the seat for the Liberal Party, was announced the victor today, following the counting of postal votes and distribution of preferences.Tasmanian Liberal Party state director Stuart Smith said the final Liberal vote increased by almost 11 per cent since the previous election. "This is a substantial achievement, which was only possible because of the special dedication and commitment of Jo and her family to the campaign," Mr Smith said.

"Jo Palmer will be a trusted voice in Parliament for the people of Launceston and the West Tamar. As a strong advocate within the State Government, Jo will continue to work to reboot and reopen the Tasmanian economy, and to help rebuild local communities, businesses and livelihoods." Launceston councillor and former mayor Janie Finlay finished a very close second in the Rosevears election.
