There was welcome news overnight with the US identifying a possible COVID-19 treatment. But it’s not the drug Australia is relying on.

Clinical trials are being conducted into the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine. Picture: Buda Mendes/Getty ImagesAbout 2500 Australian and New Zealand patients are expected to be given hydroxychloroquine as part of the Australasian COVID-19 Trial study, which is being led by the Doherty Institute in Melbourne.

About 28 per cent of those given hydroxychloroquine died, versus 11 per cent of those getting routine care alone. In its alert, the FDA noted the medicines had not been proven safe or effective for treating COVID-19 but was allowing them to be used as part of clinical trials, as well as for some patients where a clinical trial was not available or feasible.Source:AFP

“There is clearly a lot still to learn about treatments for COVID-19,” he said. “Large randomised clinical trials like ASCOT are the only way to do this.”Professor Mary-Louise McLaws of the University of New South Wales said none of the research so far into hydroxychloroquine seemed overly promising but she believes it’s too soon to rule out it out.

in mid-March to look at the safety and effectiveness of the four drugs including hydroxychloroquine, ebola treatment remdesivir, HIV drugs lopinavir/ritonavir and multiple sclerosis treatment interferon beta-1a.Source:AP“It’s only been five weeks or so and it often takes about 30 days for someone to either get better in hospital or die,” she said.

Let's mention that Remdesivir is manufactured by Gilead Sciences. The study also has multiple competing interests— Gilead Sciences is listed. Both competing interests are apparently unrelated to this work— but do you really believe that?

Yes we know... drinking or injecting disinfectant and shoving a laser light up your behind... trump’s genius idea!

You mean the drug Palmer bought and was hoping to be the miracle cure?

COVID-19 drug trial on health workers could begin in May | Sky News AustraliaInfectious diseases professor Marc Pellegrini says it would be bad to suggest the anti-malarial drug Hydroxychloroquine works against COVID-19, but it would be 'equally bad to suggest the drug doesn't work' until proper trials are conducted.\n\nProfessor Pelligrini is the infectious diseases and immune defence division head at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research where a clinical trial of Hydroxychloroquine on medical workers is expected to begin in May.\n\nHe told Sky News host Chris Kenny there is no data on the drug's use as a preventative agent, but there is a 'tiny bit of evidence around its use to treat COVID-19,' but there has not been 'robust testing of this drug in a clinical scenario'.\n\nThere is a huge amount of confusion around the drug's use to combat coronavirus and the 'only way to really solve it is through a proper, randomised, control, trial'.\n\nImage: AP Drinking bleach needs clinical trials too. There have been many many studies done on this all over the world and when combined with the antibiotic and zinc it has massive potential Sorry : This really doesn't make sense. Given the continuing expectations of low number of CV19 cases in Aust' how are they going to conduct studies on medical staff? For a start you need to two, one of them being control. To have a realistic sample size need say 100 people

Trump virus testing plan 'dissolves federal government of responsibility' | Sky News AustraliaSky News contributor Michael Ware says US President Donald Trump is providing reports about the effectiveness of the US’ coronavirus testing regime that conflict with those given by one of his top experts, Dr Deborah Birx. \n\n“She said diagnostic testing – will get us through spring, which we’re in now, and summer, which is coming, but we really need a breakthrough in antibody testing to move beyond that,” he told Sky News. \n\nThe number of confirmed virus cases has surpassed one million across the country, with the death toll reaching 57,000.\n\nMr Ware said the president held a White House briefing on Tuesday where he unveiled a “national blueprint for testing”. \n\n “What it really does is just put all the pressure on the states to come up with the tests and the way to execute them and dissolves the federal government of responsibility except for being the supplier of tests or medium of tests or swabs of last resort,” he said. \n\nImage: AP realDonaldTrump I think SkyNews should get a better informed contributor. ABC’s Media Watch and Paul Barry ‘have bizarre new enemy to attack’ | Sky News AustraliaThe ABC’s Media Watch program and host Paul Barry are using taxpayers’ money to “preach global warming alarmism, promote leftist climate policies … and attack anyone right of centre,” says Sky News host Chris Kenny. \n\nMr Kenny said the program on the national broadcaster is “supposed to be a media watchdog, standing up for truth, accuracy and the like”. \n\n“But what it does is distort the truth and promote inaccuracies in order to promote its own ideological agenda”. \n\nMr Kenny said the program recently “twisted the truth beyond recognition in order to acquit the ABC over its obsessive, biased, unfair, relentless and clearly wrong-headed persecution of Cardinal George Pell over many years”. \n\n“Now Barry, and the ABC, have found a new enemy, a very bizarre one this time, they are against a drug”. \n\nThere has been widespread interest in medical and political circles as to the use of a common medicine, which is utilised to treat malaria and rheumatoid arthritis, to potentially combat COVID-19.\n\nThe anti-malarial drug called hydroxychloroquine is currently being trialed to fight the disease, while US President Donald Trump has been one supporter of the drug as a potential cure to fight the disease. \n\n“Of course, the ABC has to find local whipping boys for their anti-Trump obsessions, that's their whole schtick … they're actually lining up against drugs that are being trialled around the world to fight COVID-19”. \n\n“I kid you not, the left has become that nutty over Trump”. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia \n TheRealPBarry I'm a taxpayer. More than happy to support anyone who outs Kenny as an insignificant peanut. Even happy to pay extra if that what it takes. TheRealPBarry Just because you guys get caught out.
