The largest study of bisexual people in the world has examined why bisexual people experience higher rates of psychological distress

It found there are significant links between poor mental health and the following factors: bisexual people in heterosexual relationships; bisexual people perceiving their sexuality to be bad or wrong, and bisexual people thinking their partner’s support for their sexuality is low. said there is often an assumption that being able to present as heterosexual could act as a “buffer” against discrimination. But the poor mental health of bisexual people suggests it is not that simple.

They are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with a mental health disorder, have depression or anxiety, and think about harming themselves or suicide.
