The comments from Kevin Gallagher come amid rising concern amid both gas producers and consumers about increased powers proposed for the market operator in gas.

High gas prices cannot be blamed for the problems with Australian manufacturing, says Santos chief executive Kevin Gallagher, who has hit back at comments from a union leader and government minister that Australian gas producers are selling gas to high-priced markets overseas at the expense of local industrial energy users.

“We have had better market opportunities that we have forgone, so that milk bottles, brake fluids, detergents, water pipes and countless other everyday products used by households and industries can be made here in Australia,” Mr Gallagher said.He noted that most of Santos’ domestic gas is sold on long-term contracts and its average price for the June half was $9.

“The new AEMO powers can almost amount to a redesign of the national gas market, with AEMO to make up the rules as they go, interfere with any contract as they see fit, and act as both a regulator and competing market participant at the same time, but with no one to regulate the regulator.”after the early winter crisis in east coast electricity and gas supply, AEMO will have control to signal and manage supply shortfalls in the east coast market next winter.

There’s a simple way to reduce gas prices: drill more gasOPINION: Now that energy reality is biting, the government should make a U-turn on its plans for a European-style transition, writes Nyunggai Warren Mundine. that is utter bullshit The gas miners r pushing to sell more gas without paying taxes We are being ripped off when east coast gas was connected to Gladstone LNG The price spiked 10x as gas was diverted by greedy miners Interesting suggestion. Reduce gas prices by drilling for more gas. Given that reasoning as gas production has ramped up over the past couple of decades the price should have come down. But it hasn't. So what happened? Costello giving Wazza a platform to spruik BS, I had that on my bingo card My biggest regret of the Coalition government was we didn't get Abbott as Prime Minister and Costello as treasurer That's a fine mess you got us into 😜

Renewable reliance will ‘never’ bring down energy pricesFormer Howard government minister Peter McGauran says energy prices will never come down if Australia is relying on renewable sources. “It will never bring down prices,” he said. “Baseload coal will, baseload gas will, but not renewable energy. “The next twenty years – nothing is going to replace coal or gas, in terms of economies of scale.” So Howard's ex minister knows better than Japanese experts? I know who I trust. Prices are going up because of renewables, it's not going to be 100% to keep the lights on Weird. I rely on renewables and every bill since has been a credit.
