Atticus the five-year-old staghound was found dumped on a pile of hard rubbish in Melbourne's west and left to die, but was brought to a shelter for life-saving treatment.
Dr Wilde, the Home's director of Veterinary Services, said the five-year-old staghound was found "dumped on a pile of rubbish … like he was a piece of rubbish himself", before he was taken in to the Lost Dogs' Home where he received lifesaving emergency treatment. "We've definitely seen a rise of cases where people are stating that their costs have increased and so they're unable to take care of their pets anymore."But cases like Atticus's just hit even harder. Especially when it was so avoidable — there is no way that Atticus needed to get to this state," she said.
However, Dr Wilde says those that are looking to rehome their furry friend should first ask within their own networks, but otherwise should always speak to local rescue organisations or even local councils. "When he first came he was unable to stand on his own. He is now able to stand on his own," she said."He just wants to be around people."
