As the peak of the Omicron outbreak in Australia looms closer, doctors in NSW and Victoria share with SBS News the grim reality of a healthcare system that's battling to overcome soaring infection numbers.

Hospitals in NSW and Victoria are feeling the workload heighten as COVID-19 hospitalisations continue to soar.As the country's east coast prepares for the worst of the COVID-19 outbreak, hospitals in NSW and Victoria are preparing for their busiest fortnight yet.

Based in Melbourne, emergency physician Dr Stephen Parnis described the current predicament in hospitals across the state as a "perfect storm".Dr Parnis said the healthcare system has always felt the burden of working under the scarcity of resources - but the pressure hospitals will face this month is unprecedented."The difference at the moment during my career and the length of this pandemic is the pressures are never as great as we're experiencing at this moment.

"You can have a sick patient in the bed in the hospital, but they're not getting any care because there's no nurse or midwife to deliver the care that they need."

DrDanGarcia Have you mentioned the vaccine injuries?

Looks to me that the health care system is battling a lack of available staff and some resources (supply chain?)… That may have as a cause the protocols being applied to infections and contacts, but are not caused by soaring infection numbers directly.

🤣Micron 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣,.

It beggars belief how LNPCrimeFamily can stuff it up so badly. Heart goes out to FHW while ScottyDoesntGiveARats keeps moving the goal posts

How do we know it's a 'peak'? Even if we get a pause between now & the next variant, you may be able to catch omicron again & again. What if we started doing all the things to stop it infecting people.

Djokovic should leave that Circus...

Don't think Omicron is the end of it! As long as some countries remain largely unvaccinated, new variants will keep emerging.

If we weren't so intent on whiteness we'd emulate the success of our Pacific neighbours: Japan, Singapore, South Korea
