A woman was told she was adopted as a baby before later finding out the heartbreaking truth — that she had been kidnapped.

Belle Barbu, 26, from Utah, found out she was taken from Romania as a baby. Picture: Operation Underground Railroad“Walking into the hotel courtyard in Rome, 5000 miles from home in the US, I was terrified. What if it was all a mistake? Then, there they were – my real family, who I was snatched from at birth.

My relationship with my adoptive parents broke down by the time I enrolled at Brigham Young University in Idaho to study public health in 2013, and we’ve been completely estranged ever since. But I never stopped wondering about where I came from.” Sarah*, the woman running the group, recognised my rare family name, and just 48 hours later, she had reached my brother Moise, 20, on social media. Sarah translated messages between us and soon I learned that I had two more siblings – a sister, Simona, 33, and a brother, Florian, 29.

My family had been extremely poor when my mum was pregnant with me. They lived in tents and made bricks for money, which was incredibly hard work. Thankfully, Belle was able to track down and reconnect with her birth parents. Federal government considering ID verification for social media accounts | Sky News AustraliaThe federal government is considering a ban on anonymous social media accounts as part of major changes to tackle the scourge of domestic violence.\n\nThis latest push for a social media crackdown comes from a parliamentary inquiry into family, domestic and sexual violence, which wants it to be mandatory for 100 points of identification to be provided.\n\nPassport or driver’s license details could be required to set up or maintain existing social media accounts after the inquiry found online abusers face little risk when it comes to punishment. \n People would just use a VPN to get around the restrictions. Also, why would banning anonymous social media accounts stop domestic violence? Sounds like a pretext to clamp down on online criticism and scrutiny of those in power.

ID required at remote NT pubs under proposed liquor law crackdownPeople in the Northern Territory's Barkly region may soon need to provide ID to buy a beer at some pubs, as the Liquor Commission unveils new liquor law proposals in a bid to reduce alcohol-related harm. You already have to show ID when you purchase ‘take away’ alcohol and say where you intend to drink it. It was a bit different at first but everyone just does it. Mind you if I were a more regular drinker I’d prob find it tedious.
